Peter McDonald a professor at ANU, who advised Wednesday’s COAG meeting, says migration should remain at current levels to meet an impending demand for labour, which will be stoked by the retirement of 10 million baby boomers over the next decade. The demographer says dropping the intake would make no difference to the infrastructure woes plaguing Sydney and Melbourne. His comments have contradicted Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s push to decrease Australia’s permanent migration rate from its current level of 190,000 to 160,000.
